Helping You Find Relief

Your eyes require care and attention to operate with comfort. Dry eye syndrome is a condition that can occur when your eyes aren’t producing enough tears to stay hydrated or something has gone wrong with the tear production process.

Dry eyes can damage your cornea if left untreated, so at Port Royal Eye Care, we are dedicated to helping you find relief.

Contact us to schedule an appointment today and see how our team can help you navigate dry eyes.

How Dry Eye Syndrome Works

To understand dry eye syndrome, it’s important to dive into the tear production process. Your tears are comprised of 3 layers:

  • The oily outer layer
  • The watery middle layer
  • The inner mucus layer

Dry eye syndrome can occur when the glands that produce these elements of your tears are not functioning properly or become inflamed.

The inflammation caused can also result in meibomian gland dysfunction. This process clogs the small glands in your eyelids that produce the oily layer of tears and cause instability in the tear film. Instability in the tear production process can lead to dry eye syndrome.

Some common signs and symptoms of dry eye syndrome can include:

  • A stinging, burning, or scratchy feeling in your eyes
  • Blurred vision or eye fatigue
  • Eye redness
  • Watery eyes

Dry Eye Solutions at Port Royal Eye Care

We offer various treatment methods at Port Royal Eye Care to help our patients find relief. Dry eyes can put a dent in your productivity and plans, so we strive to help you overcome dry eyes and regain your comfort.

Punctal plugs can help manage dry eyes when your tears are draining from your eyes too quickly. These tiny devices are placed into your tear ducts to slow down how fast tears leave the surface of your eyes.

There are 2 types of punctal plugs:

  • Temporary or dissolving—This type of plug is usually made of collagen and naturally dissolves in a few days or months.
  • Semi-permanent—These plugs are made of medical plastics and designed for long-term use. Your eye doctor can remove these plugs if needed.

We can carefully examine your eyes to determine the best type of plug and size for your needs.

RESTASIS eye drops are prescription drops that focus on treating the underlying cause of chronic dry eye. These drops focus on inflammation management and increasing your eyes’ ability to produce tears.

Using Restasis per your doctor’s recommendation can help increase tear production and bring moisture back to your eyes.

Meibomian gland expression is a procedure that involves thermal heating of the glands. This process involves manually expressing the lower glands, known as meibomian glands, to allow secretions to flow, prevent clogging, and promote healthy tears.

IPL therapy focuses on the area around the eyes to manage dry eye syndrome.

This procedure uses pulses of light to reduce inflammation, improve tear break-up time, and increase meibomian gland functionality.
